Border 2: Ayushmann’s Costly Mistake Turns VD’s Jackpot

Social media has been buzzing with claims that Ayushmann Khurrana was the original choice for a key role in the military drama Border 2. The role was allegedly later played by Varun Dhawan. However, the claim remains unverified and largely driven by online speculation.

Border 2 is the sequel to the 1997 war film Border and features Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahaan Shetty, and others. The film released theatrically on January 23, 2026. It arrived just ahead of India’s Republic Day weekend.

The strategic release timing helped Border 2 gain strong box office momentum across the country. Reports suggest the film recorded the ninth biggest opening weekend in Hindi cinema history. The patriotic theme also contributed to sustained footfalls during the extended weekend.

Speculation around Ayushmann Khurrana’s casting first surfaced on the Reddit forum r/BollyBlindNGossip. A user claimed the actor had walked away from a major role in Border 2. The post suggested the role eventually went to Varun Dhawan.

Several media platforms picked up the claim and amplified the discussion online. However, no credible entertainment outlet has confirmed that Ayushmann was approached, shortlisted, or finalised for any role in Border 2. The claim remains an unverified rumour.

Despite the lack of confirmation, social media reactions were largely critical. Many users expressed disappointment and accused Ayushmann of letting go of a career-defining opportunity. Some posts framed the decision as a costly professional misstep.

Border 2’s strong first-week collections further fuelled the debate. Users compared Ayushmann’s box office track record with stars like Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor. Both actors have delivered multiple record-breaking theatrical blockbusters in recent years.

Ayushmann’s highest-grossing film was long considered to be his 2019 romantic comedy Dream Girl, which earned Rs 142 crore. That record was surpassed by his mystery thriller Thamma. The film reportedly collected between Rs 141 and Rs 157 crore net.

His 2018 crime thriller Andhadhun, co-starring Tabu, remains one of his biggest global successes. The film amassed Rs 456 crore worldwide. It also received widespread critical acclaim and strengthened his reputation as a content-focused performer.

While these films may not form a traditional blockbuster streak, Ayushmann has carved a distinct niche. He has consistently backed mid-budget, content-driven comedy and drama films. These projects often deliver strong profitability on controlled investments.

Fans continue to praise the actor for prioritising storytelling over scale. Many believe he represents a rare breed in Bollywood that values creativity over spectacle. Audiences hope he continues exploring small-town narratives rooted in the industry’s core identity.
