Dharmendra’s Final Dance: Why It Hurts So Much?

When Ikkis releases on January 1, it will not arrive as just another period drama by Sriram Raghavan. The film quietly marks the closing of an important chapter in Hindi cinema. It features Dharmendra’s final on-screen appearance.

More than the role itself, Ikkis includes Dharmendra’s last dance. Set to a qawwali, the sequence carries emotional weight that goes beyond the film’s narrative. It stands as a subtle and moving farewell.

The song was shot in May 2024 at a college in Pune. It features Dharmendra alongside Jaideep Ahlawat during a college reunion scene. What begins as background music slowly draws him to the centre.

Friends encourage him to step onto the dance floor. The moment unfolds gently and without spectacle. It feels personal and warm, matching an actor known for sincerity rather than dramatic excess.

Choreographer Vijay Ganguly later shared details from the shoot. At 89, Dharmendra reportedly continued filming until 4 am. He remained energetic and fully involved throughout the night.

The moment does not portray him as larger than life. Instead, it reflects a committed professional driven by love for cinema. His dedication came from passion rather than obligation.

The scene also carries personal history. Vijay Ganguly’s father, Anil Ganguly, had earlier worked with Dharmendra. These shared memories surfaced quietly during the shoot.

Such connections give the song a sense of understated nostalgia. It does not demand attention but stays with the viewer. The emotion builds slowly and naturally.

Ikkis is Dharmendra’s second and final collaboration with Sriram Raghavan after Johnny Gaddaar. His last dance is not about perfection or grandeur. It is about presence.

That simplicity makes the moment deeply affecting. It feels like an honest goodbye. Perhaps this is the most fitting farewell Hindi cinema could offer.
