Traditionally, an actor’s relevance and success was measured by their presence on the big screen and the number of films in their portfolio.

But with social media platforms like Instagram growing in power, a new kind of celebrity has emerged—ones who have massive followings and brand power without frequent film appearances.

Take Jannat Zubair Rahmani, who at 23 has 50 million followers on Instagram—more than Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan or Aishwarya Rai.

She hasn’t had a significant film role since a cameo in 2018 and yet she’s a household name, thriving purely on her digital presence. She’s not alone.

Avneet Kaur another Gen Z star has 32 million followers even though she’s not been seen on screen since the pandemic.

These young actors have grown up with Instagram and have used the platform to build a direct connection with their fans making them more influential than many established film stars. This isn’t limited to Gen Z.

Older actors like Esha Gupta and Neha Sharma have also jumped on the bandwagon and are maintaining and even growing their popularity through social media despite limited recent film work.

The math is simple: earnings from brand endorsements and social media posts far outstrip what films offer.

For instance Disha Patani reportedly earns five times more from Instagram and brand deals than from her movie projects. This is a fundamental change in the entertainment industry.

Today visibility, engagement and influence on digital platforms can be as valuable—if not more so—than traditional film roles.

While this is an opportunity, it also raises questions about the very concept of celebrity and the future of acting as a craft as stardom becomes increasingly detached from the silver screen.
