Glowing Reviews: Can Dug Dug Become a Cult Classic?

Dug Dug has emerged as one of the most discussed indie films of the year. At a time when franchise films dominate the industry, the movie stands out with its unusual storytelling style. Many viewers describe it as absurd, funny, unsettling, and deeply rooted in Indian culture.

Directed by debutant Ritwik Pareek, the film draws inspiration from Rajasthan’s famous “Bullet Baba” folklore. The story follows a man named Thakur who dies in a tragic road accident while riding his old Luna. Strange events begin after the vehicle repeatedly returns to the accident site.

As rumours spread, the dead man gradually becomes known as “Thakur Sa.” His Luna turns into a sacred symbol for devotees. Over time, the roadside memorial transforms into a growing religious phenomenon mixed with commercial exploitation.

Critics believe the film’s biggest strength lies in its confident filmmaking style. Dug Dug begins with the energy of a stylish highway ride before suddenly shifting into tragedy. The film then explores how societies create myths and romanticise unusual events.

The movie has also received praise for its visual storytelling despite its modest budget. Reviewers appreciated how the film avoids directly mocking faith. Instead, it focuses on understanding why people connect deeply with stories, beliefs, and miracles.

Online discussions around Dug Dug have been highly positive, especially among cinephiles on X. Many viewers are calling it one of the freshest Indian indie films in recent years. Several users also praised its originality in an era dominated by repetitive mainstream content.

Some viewers compared the film’s tone to the quirky realism associated with filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap and Vasan Bala. Both filmmakers supported the release of Dug Dug. Their association has further increased curiosity around the film.

However, not everyone completely agrees with the praise. Some viewers felt the central idea becomes repetitive in the second half. A few critics also mentioned that the satire occasionally feels excessive and overly symbolic.

Even positive reviews admit that Dug Dug sometimes gets carried away by its atmosphere. Despite this criticism, the overall response remains strongly favourable. Audiences interested in experimental cinema continue to support the film enthusiastically.
