Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound has officially been selected as India’s entry for Best International Feature at the 98th Academy Awards. The announcement was made by Film Federation of India president Firdausul Hasan in Kolkata on Friday.
The film stars Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, and is set to release in cinemas on 26th September. It has already made multiple rounds at major international film festivals.
Homebound tells the story of two childhood friends in a North Indian village who dream of becoming police officers. But as they get closer to their goal, desperation and personal conflict test their friendship.
The plot is inspired by Basharat Peer’s essay Taking Amrit Home, now retitled A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway, published in The New York Times in 2020.
Early reactions suggest that the film is emotionally powerful. It weaves together themes of friendship, societal struggles, career pressure, and personal dilemmas into a heartfelt narrative that is resonating with viewers.
Last year, India’s Oscar entry was Laapataa Ladies. Although it made it to the shortlist, it did not bring home the award.
This time, Homebound is being backed by Dharma Productions, with Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese as executive producer. Fans believe this gives the film a stronger edge on the global stage.
The film also touches on crucial issues like pandemic hardships, the employment crisis, and caste-based discrimination. These important topics make Homebound more than just a story—it is a reflection of real social concerns.
As the nation looks forward to Oscar season, many are feeling proud to see such a significant and timely story representing India internationally.
