Jaat in Trouble: Can Controversy Boost Box Office?

Sunny Deol’s recent film Gadar 2 became a huge blockbuster, leading to high expectations for his latest project Jaat. Directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Mythri Movie Makers and People’s Media Factory, Jaat received mixed reactions, but mostly positive ones from the mass audience.

It had average openings in North India with a first-day collection of just 9 crores, while the makers were expecting 25 crores. However, due to the long weekend, the film has posted decent numbers at the box office.

The makers are now worried about its long-term box office prospects, as a big drop is expected from tomorrow (Tuesday).

Adding to these worries, there’s been significant demand on social media to ban Jaat in Tamil Nadu.

Some people on social media argue that the film disrespects Tamil culture, particularly due to its portrayal of a fictional terrorist group called the “Jaffna Tiger Force.”

The group’s resemblance to the Tamil separatist group LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam), which is considered a terrorist organization, has sparked controversy.

In response, Tamil audiences have launched a boycott campaign on social media, with the hashtag #BoycottJaatMovie going viral. Several theaters have already removed the film, and calls for multiplexes to do the same are growing.

Fans have warned of severe consequences if either Sunny Deol or Gopichand Malineni visit Tamil Nadu due to the backlash.

Jaat was doing okay business in some parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in Chennai. This boycott might hurt the film, and the makers might face a loss of ₹1-2 crores.

However, this controversy might turn into a blessing for the film, as more people from other parts of the country might flock to the theaters to watch the film just to know what the controversy is all about.
