Jai Somnath: Epic Retelling or Bhansali’s Risky Fiction?

Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions has officially announced its next major film titled Jai Somnath. The project will be directed by Ketan Mehta. The story focuses on brave warriors who defended the sacred Somnath temple during Mahmud of Ghazni’s first invasion of India.

Soon after the announcement, social media was flooded with reactions. Many users began debating whether the film will present a realistic version of events or turn into a fictionalised drama. The discussion quickly gained momentum online.

The concern largely stems from Bhansali’s reputation for taking creative liberties with historical subjects. His earlier films Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastaani were criticised for blending fact with fiction. Both projects sparked intense public debate at the time of release.

Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastaani also faced legal challenges and protests in several states. Sections of the audience objected to what they felt was an inaccurate portrayal of historical figures and events. The controversy kept the films in the headlines for weeks.

Given the deep cultural and religious significance of the Somnath temple, expectations are high. Many believe the makers must approach the subject with sensitivity and responsibility. Sticking closely to historical records may help avoid fresh controversy.

The announcement of Jai Somnath has certainly generated curiosity. Whether it will balance cinematic appeal with historical accuracy remains to be seen. For now, the debate continues across digital platforms.
