Back in early 2024, when the project was tentatively titled Arjun Ustara, Kartik was approached for the lead role. At the time, the film was still in its early development stage.

The story draws inspiration from real-life gangster figures Hussain Ustara and Sapna Didi. The gritty narrative was far removed from Kartik’s commercial and mass-friendly image during that phase of his career.

Although discussions took place, Kartik chose to step away from the project. He was reportedly cautious about taking on a dark anti-hero role while enjoying box-office success with mainstream entertainers.

In hindsight, O’ Romeo appears to be a strong performance-driven film. This aligns with the filmmaking style Vishal Bhardwaj is widely known for.

Shahid Kapoor’s long-standing collaboration with Vishal Bhardwaj seems to have shaped the film’s final tone. The narrative now leans heavily into raw violence and emotional depth.

This naturally raises the question of whether the role suited Shahid more organically. His experience with intense and layered characters adds weight to the casting choice.
