Rajamouli Can’t Win India Oscar? Only 1 Director Can

Casting director Mukesh Chhabra recently made a bold statement regarding Indian cinema’s chances of winning at the Oscars, and he singled out an acclaimed filmmaker who he thinks is worthy of the honor.

In a recent interview, Mukesh was questioned about which director, according to him, has the storytelling brilliance, emotional depth, and global appeal to bring India the highly celebrated Academy Award.

To everyone’s surprise Mukesh didn’t mention the usual suspects like Kiran Rao or S.S. Rajamouli, instead, confidently named Rajkumar Hirani, stating that if anyone in the country has the potential to bring home an Academy Award, it’s “Raju Sir.”

Mukesh has previously worked with Rajkumar Hirani on eminent films like PK, Sanju, and many more. He further described the director as a complete film school in himself, whose filmmaking process and unwavering attention to detail sets him apart in Bollywood.

As a renowned casting director, Mukesh explained that casting for a Rajkumar Hirani film takes years, as he’s totally committed to bringing authenticity to the screen.

He elaborated that what truly sets Rajkumar Hirani apart from most filmmakers in the industry is his consistent ability to infuse his films with heart, humor, and social commentary in a way that connects with the audiences far beyond the Indian borders.

Rajkumar Hirani’s filmography includes gems like Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., Lage Rahi Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots, PK, Sanju, and the recent hit Dunki.

All of these films showcase a unique narrative voice that resonates with cultures that might be different from ours but have similar issues.

Mukesh believes that if anyone in India has the potential to break the Oscar dry spell, it’s without a doubt Rajkumar Hirani, who knows how to bridge the gap between local and global with his unmatched storytelling prowess.
