The Indian film industry seems to have witnessed a tremendous shift in female roles, especially the ones playing cops. Yes, these female inspectors are no longer seen in supportive roles or decorative additions to male-centric narratives.
Leading the charge is Rani Mukerji’s Shivani Shivaji Roy in the Mardaani series. The audience loved her no-nonsense approach, emotional depth, and fight against evil in the first two prequels. Now, she is back with the same aura in Mardaani 3, the first look of which was revealed recently.
The theatrical release date of this much anticipated movie is February 27, 2026. As we await the return of Rani’s super cop avatar, let’s speak more about the rise of female cop characters on the big screens in Bollywood.
We’ve seen some powerful portrayals like Tabu’s commanding IG Meera Deshmukh in Drishyam and Sonakshi Sinha as Anjali Bhaati in Dahaad. Each character brings something unique to the screen and everyone is loving this strategy, strength, and layered vulnerability.
While female cop films have received praise on various occasions, there have been certain cases where filmmakers seemingly ended up making a joke of the same.
The best example is Singham Again where Rohit Shetty presented a spoof version of Simmba with Deepika Padukone. Rohit also tried to bring an intense female cop by casting Shilpa Shetty in Indian Police Force, which eventually did not work.
It is pretty clear that simply finalizing someone for the role of a female cop is not enough. The characters have to be written perfectly on paper and there has to be a director who is well aware of how to present a female cop on screen without any flaws.
Female cop-led movies are also not just about a woman leading a high-octane chase or cracking a murder case isn’t an exception but a norm.
In reality, they reflect internal conflicts, motherhood, and personal loss. This definitely adds emotional weight to action which the Indian audience loves.
So, are female cops here to stay in Bollywood? Yes, of course! However, the makers should also focus on creating authentic, well-rounded narratives beyond action. Not every character is about showing kicks and blows on the screen. Some of them are more about highlighting intelligence, emotional resilience, and leadership.
