Akshay Kumar’s fans have been waiting for years to watch him return in Rowdy Rathore 2. However, the latest update has left them disappointed, as insiders confirmed that the much-awaited sequel has been shelved.
Producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali had worked on the script for three years. Reports suggest that the same script may now be used for another project, but there is no confirmation about Akshay Kumar’s involvement in it.
The cancellation was reportedly due to a lack of response from Disney India, which currently holds the rights to the original Rowdy Rathore after acquiring UTV Motion Pictures. Disney India has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
The script for Rowdy Rathore 2 was penned by V. Vijayendra Prasad. It is being reworked to shape into a mass entertainer with strong cop drama elements. Tamil filmmaker P.S. Mithran is said to be approached for direction, with production expected in early 2026.
Although there is no official announcement, many feel it is wise to move forward with a fresh film instead of reviving a 13-year-old blockbuster. Rowdy Rathore was one of Akshay’s biggest hits, but recreating that success years later seems unlikely.
The makers may still consider Akshay for the lead, as he has played memorable cop roles in Rowdy Rathore, Mohra, and Main Khiladi Tu Anari. His presence could bring credibility and familiarity to the project.
Sidharth Malhotra was earlier in talks for the lead role. However, with his recent solo films not performing well, the producers are exploring other options. The final casting is yet to be decided.
Even if the story feels routine, the success will depend on the director’s ability to add mass appeal and entertainment. Fans now wait for further updates to see how this film takes shape and whether it makes its mark at the box office.
