For the last few decades, the Khans have defined (and redefined) Bollywood. They still are. Each decade of Bollywood has one film by either of the three that has defined the era.
While Aamir has been focusing on producing films, Shahrukh and Salmaan are still very much in the game.
But why don’t their films impact the audience like they used to?
While these actors continue to rule the hearts of the audience and deliver box-office hits, Bollywood filmmakers have been failing to do justice to their potential and capitalize on it.
Bollywood, in the past few years, has been struggling with this. Whereas, South Indian filmmakers have been continuously exploring the range and possibilities with actors.
Look at the magic Atlee did with SRK in Jawan or AR Murugadoss did with Aamir Khan in Ghajini.
That required the actors to completely give into the vision of the directors.
A great share of exploring the capabilities of actors comes with how much the artists trust the director. When actors feel like they are in safe hands, they surrender.
But recently, only a few Bollywood filmmakers have a strong script that compels the actors to trust the directors. If there is a lack of trust, even the most talented stars struggle to perform.
The South has already worked out this aspect, ensuring success for both stars and stories.
There is a need for strong director-actor collaborations in Bollywood. However, that’s not enough. There should be a promising script as well to make the star shine through the story.
Films like Jawan see a successful collaboration of the three, and we need more films like those.
