Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life came out in theatres after a long wait of almost three years. However, the response from the audience was not as great as expected, and the box office numbers are out now.
Directed by Mani Ratnam, the film was also released in Hindi, and the overall collection so far is reported to be Rs. 11 crores in Tamil Nadu. The numbers for the Hindi version are also disappointing, as it has accumulated something below Rs. 50 lakhs.
For now, the total collections are reported to be Rs. 14.50 crores in India, and the film has already witnessed a big drop on Day 2 in various territories.
The first day worldwide gross is reported to be Rs. 38 crores, which is very low for a Kamal Haasan film. The negative word-of-mouth has already left an impact on the film and the numbers are reported to be lower than the first weekend of Indian 2.
It seems like people did not forget the experience of Indian 2 last year, and maybe it will take some time for them to accept Kamal Haasan for another time. However, the die-hard fans are possibly not happy with the overall execution of the main storyline, as the film offers very little entertainment.
Apart from this, the audience’s expectations were sky-high, considering the previous collaborations of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan. Unfortunately, the film did not feature anything new, and Mani Ratnam’s direction was completely rejected by the audience.
Kamal Haasan clearly needs to change his choice of scripts if he is willing to bounce back. He has to choose something at the level of Vikram or his other hit films, such as Vishwaroopam.
Moreover, the makers also need to understand that they should avoid releasing a South film in Hindi markets until the film becomes a hit in its original territory.
Although Hindi audiences have watched South films, they are still not familiar with many popular faces, and in such cases, films are expected to fail.
