suriya-scene-telugu-reviewWhat Is the Film About?

Suriya plays a super-smart cop with a serious disability. Before taking a break from the police force, he takes on a challenging case. How he tracks down the suspect and solves the crime forms the heart of the story.

Performances

Suriya looks refreshingly young, with the styling, especially his hair working well for him. It’s also nice to see a mainstream hero wearing shorts for most of the film. His performance is neat and effective.

Naslen does well, but the role doesn’t make full use of him. Nazriya does her job well, though she looks a bit aged.

director-jithu-madhavanAnalysis

SCENE is directed by Jithu Madhavan, who has delivered two interesting films so far. This time, he teams up with Suriya, the biggest star he has worked with in his career.

The film opens with an intriguing murder backdrop, with Naslen getting things started on an interesting note. Suriya’s introduction follows the familiar South hero template, but the setup still gives it a fresh feel.

The first half revolves around cops and a murder mystery, mixing a bit of seriousness with the quirky humour we have seen in Jithu Madhavan’s earlier films. The premise is fresh, but the ideas are only passably entertaining.

Even the twist involving Suriya’s character is interesting on paper, but its reveal and the way he handles situations around his problem don’t quite click. These moments needed stronger, more convincing ideas to make the narrative more enjoyable.

Overall, the first half feels crisp and offers passable entertainment.

The second half is a further step down from the first. It doesn’t build on anything that worked earlier, whether it’s Suriya’s character, the investigative track or Naslen’s thread. Even by the middle of the second half, none of these threads has made meaningful progress.

The investigation feels lacklustre, and the humour becomes repetitive and tedious. Apart from a few scattered moments, the film lacks a steady flow of laughs. The parents’ track, with them trying to help the super-smart Suriya solve a complicated case, has a couple of moments, but doesn’t work as a whole.

The closure is also underwhelming. Naslen is presented as a sharp, effortless killer, but the way Suriya tracks him down and the case is wrapped up feels routine. For a quirky film, the climax needed a fresh and solid payoff. Instead, it ends like a familiar action sequence.

Overall, SCENE works in individual scenes, but the film as a whole doesn’t come together. The first half is reasonably entertaining, but the second half lets it down.

Performances by Other Actors

SCENE features familiar supporting actors like Anandaraj, Lal, and Raj Priyan, but only Lal’s character really works and delivers laughs.

music-director-sushin-shyamMusic and Other Departments?

Music is composed by Sushin Shyam. The songs are a letdown, but the background score is refreshingly good. It adds energy to several simple scenes and feels fresh, especially for a quirky film. Cinematography by Vineeth Augustian is neat that suits the film’s tone. Editing by Ajmal Sabu could have been tighter, especially in the second half.

The production values by Zhagaram Studios & 2D Entertainment are adequate for a quirky comedy like this.

Highlights?

Refreshing new look for Suriya

Fun in parts (Especially Lal’s track and a few other moments)

BGM

Drawbacks?

Weak character development and progression

Weakly written investigative track

Inconsistent humour

Tedious second half and climax

Did I Enjoy It?

Only the first half.

Will You Recommend It?

Not as a must-watch. If you’re a fan of Jithu Madhavan’s work go ahead but keep your expectations low.
