Vivek Agnihotri’s upcoming film The Bengal Files is set to release next month, and his recent press conference remarks are now in the spotlight. The director said that his goal is to bring out untold stories of India and that he chooses to make films on Hindus.
He was responding to a question about how films on controversial subjects often face opposition even after clearance from the CBFC. Vivek pointed out that such movies always get delayed or disrupted before release, which impacts their reach with audiences.
Citing examples of Mission Kashmir, Fanaa, Roja, Fiza, and Haider, Vivek questioned why Aamir Khan or Vidhu Vinod Chopra were never asked about leaving out the story of Kashmiri Pandits in their films. He suggested there was selective questioning in the industry.
Vivek also argued that if he ever made a film from an Islamic perspective, he would be told to present something else. He said that many people strongly believe films based on Hinduism should not be made at all.
The director added that audiences expect him to present every side of a story and assured that he will continue to attempt this approach in his work. His statement hinted that he wants to balance different perspectives while staying true to his vision.
Since the trailer of The Bengal Files dropped, the film has faced multiple FIRs and drawn controversy. Despite this, there are currently no hurdles in its release. Reports suggest that the CBFC may edit a few sequences without disrupting the film’s flow.
The bigger question is whether The Bengal Files will achieve the massive success of The Kashmir Files, which collected more than Rs. 300 crores at the box office. The film’s release will ultimately decide its fate with audiences.
