Trailer Cancelled? Controversial Movie Faces Heat

Vivek Agnihotri The Bengal Files trailer event

The Bengal Files trailer launch in Kolkata was cancelled, creating a fresh controversy around director Vivek Agnihotri’s latest film. Known for politically charged cinema, Agnihotri shared a video claiming the theatre backed out at the last moment despite written confirmations.

The filmmaker explained that since the story is set against West Bengal’s violent political history, Kolkata was the most fitting location for the launch. But on arrival, his team was told the event would not take place due to political sensitivities.

According to Agnihotri, the theatre said hosting the trailer launch was too risky, as the subject matter might attract unwanted trouble. Though he acknowledged their decision, he expressed disappointment that such restrictions were still necessary in today’s times.

His video quickly drew criticism online, with many accusing him of manufacturing controversy to promote the film. Some argued that his movies thrive mainly on right-wing support, often overlooking accuracy and focusing instead on portraying certain communities negatively.

At the same time, another section of social media supported him. They pointed out that if the CBFC has cleared the film, there should be no issue with showing its trailer. They also questioned whether such restrictions harm freedom of speech.

The debate remains heated, with strong opinions on both sides. Whether The Bengal Files overcomes this storm and connects with audiences or not is something only time will reveal, but the controversy has already placed it under the spotlight.
