Comedian vs Controversial Director: Online Faceoff

Vivek Agnihotri Bengal Files controversy

Director Vivek Agnihotri is facing criticism on social media for defending his upcoming film The Bengal Files. He claimed that mocking the film is an insult to victims of the Hindu genocide during Direct Action Day, which the film depicts.

On X, Vivek stated that ridiculing The Bengal Files disrespects millions who suffered in history. He also urged that legal action should be taken against those who criticise films, citing practices in Germany as an example.

However, his remarks triggered strong backlash online. Social media users and critics accused him of hiding behind nationalism to silence genuine questions about the film’s narrative.

Many pointed out that The Bengal Files allegedly contains false claims, historical inaccuracies, and manipulative storytelling. According to critics, instead of presenting fact-based history, the film promotes a divisive agenda.

By invoking nationalism and Hinduism in his defence, Vivek attempted to shield the film from scrutiny. But audiences quickly challenged his approach.

Comedian Kunal Kamra questioned Vivek’s logic, asking whether disliking J.P. Dutta’s Border would mean insulting those who sacrificed their lives in the Kargil War. His comparison highlighted the flaws in Vivek’s argument.

Social media users argued that Vivek’s claim equates film criticism with disrespecting real victims. They believe such a stance exploits patriotism to push a hate-filled film while distorting history.

Observers also noted that using nationalism as a protective shield weakens the seriousness of Direct Action Day. It undermines the actual pain of victims who lost their lives.

Audiences say filmmakers like Vivek must understand that criticism is not rooted in religious bias. People reject such films because they are fact-aware and unwilling to accept manipulative storytelling.
