Who Killed Kill Ajay Devgn’s Risk-Taking Cinema?

In recent years, Ajay Devgn has often appeared in roles built around familiar commercial formulas. His characters include a determined father hiding a crime, an officer conducting income tax raids or a hero in age gap romances. Many observers feel his recent choices appear more limited in scope.

However, the shift toward sequels and mainstream entertainers may not be entirely his decision. Some industry watchers believe audience response has played a major role. When experimental films struggle at the box office, actors often move toward safer commercial options.

For many years, Ajay Devgn stood out as one of the few mainstream stars willing to experiment. He moved across genres with ease. His career includes action films, intense dramas, comedy roles and even unconventional cinema that pushed storytelling boundaries.

Despite this willingness to explore different stories, many of his risk taking films struggled commercially during their initial release. Several projects received critical praise but failed to attract large audiences in theatres.

Films such as Zakhm, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Company, Kachche Dhaage, Omkara, Khakee, Shivaay, Raincoat, Yuva, Runway 34 and Maidaan did not become massive box office successes when they first released.

Interestingly, many of these films later gained strong appreciation. Over time they developed loyal audiences and are often described as cult classics today. Viewers frequently praise their storytelling and performances years after their theatrical run.

This contrast between critical appreciation and box office response has created debate. Many people celebrate these films now, but they received limited support from audiences when they were playing in cinemas.

Such experiences may have influenced Ajay Devgn’s recent choices. Focusing on sequels and large scale entertainers reduces financial risk. These projects often guarantee stronger opening numbers and wider audience reach.

Even within commercial cinema, Ajay Devgn continues to explore different genres. His recent work still includes romance and thriller elements. However, the scale of experimentation appears more controlled than before.

When experimental films fail to attract audiences, actors eventually become cautious. The industry often responds directly to box office behaviour. In many ways, audience support shapes the type of cinema mainstream stars choose to pursue.
