Dark Truth: Block Bookings Worse Than Paid Extortion?

Before Dhurandhar released, Yami Gautam spoke openly about extortion in the film industry. She said producers and exhibitors face pressure from influencers and YouTube channels who demand money for positive coverage. You see how this damages trust and poisons working relationships.

Her comments struck a chord with fans and several celebrities backed her publicly. You could sense anger building around how money controls perception in Bollywood. People agreed that such practices hurt genuine talent and weaken the industry from within.

But extortion is not the only problem troubling Bollywood today. Another issue gaining attention is corporate bookings or self-bookings. You now hear about it more often after the pandemic, when competition for numbers became fierce.

Producers and studios allegedly buy their own tickets to push up box office figures. Instead of real viewers filling seats, you see inflated sales on paper. The aim is simple, create high demand even when interest stays low.

When advance bookings look weak, hype crashes fast. Bad numbers invite trolling and harsh headlines. To avoid that, producers rush to secure bulk tickets themselves so the reported collection appears strong in public spaces.

Ironically, Dhurandhar now faces the same talk. Trade sites claim the film used block bookings to lift its advance numbers. As a reader, you hear that Thursday night saw heavy bulk buying to keep buzz alive.

This tactic works for a moment but fails over time. Empty theatres mean no real word-of-mouth. Without genuine viewers, recovery becomes harder and losses only grow.

It also blocks honest feedback. When fake numbers hide the truth, you never know what worked and what failed. The next film then repeats the same mistakes, and the cycle continues.

Even so, few celebrities speak about this openly. You see silence in a cut-throat industry where survival comes first. The truth stays buried while the system keeps running on numbers that mean nothing.
