The new action thriller “Monkey Man”, the first directorial debut of Dev Patel, which received much appreciation from SXSW earlier this month. But, Dev Patel conveyed that making this movie was the biggest change he faced.
According to him, everyday they faced catastrophe. He begged their financier not to shut them down. The movie was supposed to be shot in India, but because of Covid he lost his cinematographer and production designer.
Then, they found a small island in Indonesia where he shot the movie along with 500 more people.
The story revolves around Dev’s character. Who gets money from being beaten up in the underground fight club. Later he will be caught up in events and get tangled with India’s most wealthiest and corrupt social events, and he will try to resolve his childhood trauma. When it’ll be clear infront of him that who murdered his mother and continued on with Islamophobic violence and caste discriminated acts, he will assemble people and he will surly get a revenge.
While talking about the movie he also mentioned that all the places and locations he selected to shoot, he lost several of them. The borders were all closed up so he couldn’t bring more side characters.
During the shooting many of his equipments including a camera broke down, and things went down hill to that extent that they had to shoot many scenes with the help of phone camera and gopro. The financial problem was so severe that the producer had to invest from his own account.
Apart from all that, the physical injuries Patel faced during the shooting was horrible.
While introducing the movie to the audience in SXSE Patel said , this action thriller has been abused by the system, i wanted to give it real pain, real trauma with a mix of some culture.
