Netflix Breaks Its Own Rule with Biggest Gamble in 2027

Netflix is preparing for a rare big screen release. The platform is taking a bold step with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. This move marks a shift from its usual digital first strategy.

The film is directed by Greta Gerwig. It will release in IMAX and theatres worldwide on February 12, 2027. It will then arrive on Netflix on April 2, 2027.

This gives the film a theatrical window of over 45 days. Exclusive IMAX previews will begin on February 10, 2027. The release plan shows a strong focus on cinema experience.

The story is based on the 1955 novel by C. S. Lewis. It explores the origin of Narnia. This will be the first screen adaptation of this specific book.

The cast includes David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell in key roles. It also features Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma.

This project is one of Netflix’s biggest bets. The Narnia book series has sold over 120 million copies across 70 countries. It has been translated into more than 60 languages.

Netflix has rarely chosen theatres before digital release. This makes the film a major experiment for the platform. The industry is watching closely.

If the film succeeds, it could change Netflix’s release strategy. If it fails, the platform may return to digital only releases. The result will be important for future decisions.
