Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is delaying its release. The newest episode in 20th Century Studios’ revamped Planet of the Apes series was initially set to hit theatres on May 24th. However, the studio revealed on Friday that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will now debut two weeks early, on May 10th.
This takes Planet of the Apes away from the congested Memorial Day weekend, which also includes the premieres of Warner Bros.’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Sony’s The Garfield Movie. There will be no competition on May 10th, therefore Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes should do well at the ticket office.
Another benefit for the 20th Century Studios picture is that the additional two-week run of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ensures more IMAX screenings, which normally cost more than a conventional movie ticket, and hence more money.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is going to be the first in the franchise to be shown in IMAX. On May 10th, the Amy Winehouse-focused Fade to Black will compete with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s The Fall Guy, which will debut a week earlier. The next week, the film IF, starring John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds, hits theatres.
