Anil Ravipudi discusses Irumudi’s success and festival releases
Anil Ravipudi’s comments at the Irumudi success meet have opened up an interesting debate about festival releases in Telugu cinema. His point was that a film does not necessarily need a festival window to become a big success. Irumudi is the perfect example. The film arrived outside the major festival seasons and still turned into a huge commercial success, reportedly crossing RS 220 crore worldwide.
But if festival releases are not that important, why does the industry continue to fight so hard for those dates?
Anil’s own release choices make the question even more relevant. Sankranthiki Vasthunam arrived during Sankranthi and delivered a major success. His latest Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu also used the Sankranthi window and emerged as a big commercial winner. And now, even his upcoming film January 12 Vidudala is targeting the Sankranthi season.
That is where the contradiction becomes difficult to ignore.
Irumudi succeeded without the holiday advantage, but how many films can actually pull RS 200 crore plus outside a festival? Very few. A festival date gives a film more shows, a larger holiday audience and a stronger opening opportunity.
Festival dates do not guarantee a hit. But they clearly give filmmakers an advantage. Irumudi proved that content can create its own season. Anil Ravipudi’s own release strategy proves he knows the value of the season too. So this is not really about whether festivals are necessary. It is about whether Irumudi’s exceptional success is being used to dismiss an advantage that filmmakers, including Anil himself, continue to chase.
