From 100 Cr Loss to Profits: Content Matters Not Stars

Producer Anil Sunkara has experienced several ups and downs throughout his career. At one stage, he worked as a partner in 14 Reels Entertainment, where he produced star studded big films such as Namo Venkatesa, Dookudu, and 1: Nenokkadine. At the same time, he also produced smaller films under his own banner, AK Entertainments. Eventually, he exited 14 Reels Entertainment and decided to focus entirely on his AK Entertainments banner.

During that phase, Anil Sunkara did not limit himself to small budget projects. He began producing high budget films with star heroes. Unfortunately, those big films caused him major financial losses. The film Maha Samudram, made with Sharwanand and Siddharth, exceeded their market value in budget and resulted in a severe setback.

Later, he produced Agent with Akhil Akkineni and Bhola Shankar with Chiranjeevi, which ended as epic disasters. Industry estimates suggest that these three films together may have caused losses close to 100 crores for Anil Sunkara.

Despite suffering such heavy blows, Anil Sunkara did not step away from the film industry. He continued with determination and confidence. Interestingly, while big films hurt him financially, small and mid-range films offered him some relief. Samajavaragamana, made with Sree Vishnu, generated decent profits. Last year’s Mazaka with Sundeep Kishan avoided big losses due to its controlled budget.

Now, Anil Sunkara has scored another success with Sharwanand’s Nari Nari Naduma Murari. Made on a controlled budget, the film entered the Sankranthi race without much hype and moved ahead due to positive word of mouth. The collections are holding up decently, and the film now shows the potential to generate good profits for the producer.

Trade experts feel that the film had much more potential. If it had released solo instead of in a crowded Sankranthi window, it could have done even better due to its entertaining content. However, this success has clearly restored Anil Sunkara’s confidence and reinforced the value of smart budgeting and solid content driven filmmaking instead of running behind big stars.
