Actress Anupama Parameswaran has filed a formal complaint with the Kerala Cyber Crime Police after facing serious online harassment and defamation. The actress shared the details of the incident on her social media account, expressing both shock and disappointment at the level of abuse directed toward her.
In her statement, Anupama revealed that she had come across an Instagram profile spreading false information and posting morphed photos about her. The same account had also targeted her family, friends, and co-stars with baseless accusations. On further checking, she discovered that the person behind it had created multiple fake profiles to continue the harassment. Deeply disturbed by these actions, she approached the cybercrime department, which acted swiftly.
The investigation revealed that the culprit was a 20-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu. Anupama said she was shocked to learn that such behavior came from someone so young. She clarified that although she would not reveal the girl’s identity, keeping her future and mental well-being in mind, she would still pursue the case legally.
Anupama wrote, “To my surprise, it turned out to be a 20-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu. Considering her young age, I have chosen not to disclose her identity, as I do not wish to compromise her future or peace of mind. However, I am sharing this incident to make one thing very clear. Owning a smartphone or having access to social media platforms does not give anyone the right to harass, defame, or spread hatred against others. Every action online leaves a trace, and accountability will follow.
We have proceeded with legal action, and the individual will face the consequences of her actions. Being an actor or a public figure does not strip away basic rights. Cyberbullying is a punishable offence, and accountability is real.”
