When Balakrishna gets the right mass content, the box office goes on a rampage mode. However, director Boyapati Sreenu, who is widely known for presenting Balakrishna perfectly, recently faced a shocking setback with Akhanda 2. Despite being a hat trick hit combination with massive hype, the film flopped badly. Because of this disastrous result, the responsibility on director Gopichand Malineni, who is now set to direct Balakrishna, has increased significantly.
Boyapati Sreenu holds a special place in Balakrishna’s career. Compared to Gopichand Malineni, the Boyapati Balakrishna combination has delivered more hits. Films like Simha, Legend, and Akhanda created a benchmark in Tollywood for mass films. Many in the industry consider Boyapati to be a level above Gopichand Malineni in terms of hero presentation. But such a senior and proven director also struggled at the box office recently. All eyes have now shifted to Gopichand Malineni’s upcoming project, NBK111.
Earlier, Gopichand directed Balakrishna in Veera Simha Reddy. He showcased Balakrishna in a rugged all black avatar and delivered some solid mass moments. However, commercially, the film was just average, as the second half was a complete dud. The Sankranthi season helped the collections to an extent. With Akhanda 2 failing to meet expectations, Gopichand Malineni now has to reinvent the mass formula.
As this new project prepares to begin shooting from March, Gopichand needs to adopt a more grounded and realistic approach. Today’s audience no longer comes to theatres just for elevations and slow-motion shots. Recent results clearly show that films succeed only when the story has strong substance. Gopichand must put complete effort into content development.
Balakrishna’s trademark power and aggression need solid storytelling support to convert into box office success. Gopichand must also ensure that the pacing issues seen in Veera Simha Reddy do not repeat. Overall, this project stands as a massive challenge for Gopichand’s career. He must prove that he has not become outdated like Boyapati Sreenu, who failed to deliver a commercial success at the box office due to poor story and age-old execution in Akhanda 2.
