2025 has been a rollercoaster ride for Indian cinema, with many big star films going unnoticed while some medium budget movies won the hearts of audiences.
For the Malayalam industry, this year was one of its best in terms of both business and critical acclaim. Indian cinema also witnessed a never-before-seen scenario where a female centric film, Lokah, became the highest grossing and most critically acclaimed Malayalam film of the year.
Even though there were some disappointments for Bollywood, 2025 turned out to be a revival year for the industry. After a few years of downfall with only one or two blockbusters here and there, films like Chhaava, Saiyaara, Tere Ishk Mein, and Dhurandhar became pan Indian hits. They not only succeeded in terms of business, but audiences genuinely celebrated these films.
At the same time, the Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil industries faced a disappointing year, as only a few films made an impact and many star driven projects ended up as complete failures.
As is the ritual at the end of every year, there is a debate among audiences regarding which films won their hearts and made the biggest impact. Here is the top film from each industry this year based on content and performances and not based on box office collections.
1) Hindi: Dhurandhar
While the entire Bollywood industry waited for a solid film from top actors and directors to prove their potential, Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar quietly delivered a classic. Dhurandhar is currently on a box office rampage and is building a cult fan base that will celebrate it for decades.
Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Sara Arjun did not just act, they lived their characters. In particular, Akshaye Khanna’s portrayal of Rehman Dakait stands out. Even though he was already known for powerful performances, this role will be remembered by the next generation as his defining act.
2) Telugu: Kuberaa
If anyone feels that Dhanush’s performance in Kuberaa was not impressive, they are clearly missing something. Despite strong performances from Nagarjuna and a gripping screenplay by Sekhar Kammula, Dhanush delivered a career best performance and became the primary reason the film emerged as the top Telugu film of the year.
Sekhar Kammula created the world of Kuberaa with great depth, ensuring that every character made a strong impact. Kuberaa was not only a comeback film for Nagarjuna but also helped bring out the best performer in him.
3) Tamil: Tourist Family
Last year, if someone had claimed that a feel-good film starring Sasikumar would become the most loved Tamil film of 2025, surpassing all-star driven and highly anticipated projects, no one would have believed it. But Tourist Family achieved exactly that with solid performances and heart touching scenes.
Credit goes to debut director Abishan Jeevinth for creating a film filled with warmth and positive vibes. While Sasikumar was the main pillar, the child character Mulli, played by Kamalesh Jagan, became a major reason the film won audience affection. His comedy scenes turned into a laughter riot in theatres. Tourist Family not only did wonders at the box office but also became a trendsetter for feel good family dramas in Tamil cinema.
4) Malayalam: Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra
Before its release, very few people were interested in this film because it is a female centric superhero movie. However, after its release, word of mouth spread like wildfire, and many centers in Kerala reported houseful shows for over 20 days.
That is how Lokah made a massive impact and laid the foundation for a superhero universe, powered by the charming performance of Kalyani Priyadarshan. Similar to the hype around the YRF Spy Universe or Lokesh Kanagaraj’s cinematic universe, the Lokah universe now carries huge expectations. If Dominic Arun delivers a solid second part, Chapter 2 has a strong chance of becoming the most loved Malayalam film of 2026.
5) Kannada: Kantara Chapter 1
So far, only a few prequels or sequels have become huge blockbusters in Indian cinema, and Kantara Chapter 1 is one of them. Even though the film carried huge expectations because the first part was a pan Indian success, Rishab Shetty delivered a top-notch experience with a divine touch through his filmmaking.
Eight out of ten people became huge Rishab Shetty fans after watching the film. Even the remaining two were left mind blown by his performance in the climax, which became the heart of the film. With stunning performances and jaw dropping visuals, it would be a sin not to call Kantara Chapter 1 the best Kannada film of the year.
Even audiences who hold mixed opinions about the film’s ideology have accepted Dhurandhar as a landmark cinematic achievement.
These are the films from each industry that made the biggest impact in 2025. Now, all eyes are on what Indian cinema has in store for 2026.
