Tensions are high ahead of the release of Kamal Haasan’s film Thug Life. On Monday, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) president M Narasimhalu said no theatre in Karnataka will screen the film—even if legal steps are taken.
His comment came after Kamal Haasan moved the Karnataka High Court, requesting protection for a smooth release of the film in the state.
Narasimhalu told PTI they only found out about the court petition through media reports. He said the matter has now become a state and language issue.
“We got a letter from the government. Pro-Kannada groups, political leaders, and the public all want an apology. Let them go to court—we haven’t broken any law. But no theatres here will screen the film,” he said firmly.
He added that the film’s distributors will speak to Kamal Haasan, who is currently in Dubai promoting the film. Based on that discussion, they will decide the next step. He also said that the South Indian Film Chamber has tried to contact Kamal Haasan regarding the issue.
The controversy started because of an old comment by Kamal Haasan, where he said Kannada evolved from Tamil. KFCC has said the film will not be allowed to release unless he apologizes publicly.
Kamal Haasan has responded to the criticism, saying his comment was made out of love and added, “Love will never apologize.”
As the film’s release nears, the dispute has only grown louder, with legal and political angles adding to the drama.
This week will witness the release of Thug Life and Housefull 5. Both are big crucial films and are releasing with high box office expectations.
