BO in ICU: Disaster Season Continues, All Eyes on PK

The box office has been following a frustrating pattern lately — one rare hit followed by long dry spells. That trend has continued this year as well.

Theatres saw some movement during the first half of May, but things quickly slowed down.

The situation briefly improved in the third week of June with the release of Kuberaa, which managed to draw decent crowds for about two to three weeks. After that, Kannappa made a decent start but lost steam after the first day.

Last week’s big release, Thammudu, completely failed at the box office and was a washout by the weekend. 3BHK got decent reviews but couldn’t pull crowds because it was a dubbed film and lacked hype.

This week has been even worse. Films like Oh Bhaama Ayyo Rama and The 100 released with almost zero attention.

Actor Suhas, who was once praised for doing strong content-based films, is now facing backlash. His latest release is being called the worst of his career. The reviews were poor, and theatre occupancy was almost zero from day one.

The 100, starring TV actor RK Sagar, also failed to attract audiences. Though the word-of-mouth wasn’t entirely negative, the film didn’t get noticed.

Looking ahead, the upcoming releases aren’t building much hope either. Two films are set to release — Junior, marking the debut of Gali Janardhan Reddy’s son Kireeti, and Kothapallilo Okkapudu, directed by C/o Kancharapalem producer Praveena Paruchuri.

While Junior is getting some publicity, it’s unclear if that will be enough to pull people into theatres in the current climate.

Right now, the only film that seems capable of breaking this dull phase is Hari Hara Veera Mallu, starring Power Star Pawan Kalyan.

Slated to release on July 24 after several delays, the film has the potential to bring energy back to the box office — if it sticks to its release date. Clearly, the audience is waiting for a big event film, and this might be the one to deliver.
