Chiranjeevi’s Gaddar Awards Speech: Why So Much Controversy?

Chiranjeevi has landed in the middle of an unintentional and unnecessary controversy after his speech at the Telangana Gaddar Awards event in Hyderabad. What started as a simple comment during the event has now turned into a heated discussion across social media and political circles.

During his speech, Chiranjeevi praised Revanth Reddy and appreciated the Telangana government for honoring artists through awards. He also suggested that the Andhra Pradesh government should take inspiration and restart the Nandi Awards, which were once considered very prestigious in the Telugu film industry. He mentioned that N. Chandrababu Naidu could consider bringing them back.

However, the issue started because of how he worded his statement. While referring to Andhra Pradesh, he used terms like “neighboring” or “other Telugu state.” Instead of suggesting inspiration, he could have simply stated that restarting the awards in Andhra Pradesh would benefit artists. The choice of words led some to interpret his remarks as an unnecessary comparison between the two Telugu states.

Interestingly, there is already some development in this issue. Kandula Durgesh, the Cinematography Minister of Andhra Pradesh, had recently announced plans to form a committee to restart the Nandi Awards.

Some observers also point out that having separate award systems in two Telugu-speaking states could lead to comparisons and possible controversies in the future. At the same time, many people agree that awards are important to recognize talent in the film industry and encourage artists.

There are also questions being raised about the past. When YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was Chief Minister, the film industry reportedly did not strongly push for the revival of Nandi Awards, even though they approached the government on other issues like ticket pricing.

It remains to be seen whether Chiranjeevi will respond again to clarify his statement or let the discussion settle on its own.
