Metro Rail Project pillars need hard soil so as to make them durable but the Port City does not have a full portion of hard or disintegrated soil. According to estimates, the 39-km long VMR may have around 1,250 to 1,300 pillars.
The cost of construction of a pillar ranges from Rs 1-1.5 crore but in the case of the Vizag metro it may go up by 15-20% due to the soil structure. Expert team from a Jaipur-based geotechnical engineering consultancy is expected to take up the soil test from March 20. The company is currently testing the soil for Vijayawada Metro.
