The first reactions to Godzilla Minus Zero have gone completely off the charts! Journalists and critics who attended the New York Film Festival screening described Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel in terms ranging from “jaw-dropping” and “phenomenal” to “a truly epic cinematic feat.”
Several reactions particularly praise the film for combining enormous monster spectacle with an emotional family story. Some viewers even admitted that the sequel brought them to tears.
That kind of response has immediately raised expectations for what could be one of the biggest international releases of the year. The first film, Godzilla Minus One, became a major global success and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Godzilla Minus Zero is also reportedly the first Japanese feature in the franchise to be shot for IMAX screens. The larger-scale action and R-rated sequences appear to be major talking points in the early reactions.
There is another interesting factor this time: Godzilla Minus Zero opens in the US on November 6, the same date as Namit Malhotra’s much-awaited Ramayana worldwide release. That puts two ambitious VFX-heavy spectacles in direct proximity. It may create an intense battle for premium formats and IMAX screens.
Godzilla also has an established audience in India, where the franchise has developed a noticeable following. If the extraordinary early reactions translate into strong audience interest, the film could become a serious competitor for premium screens in the Indian market as well. With Ramayana arriving on the same day, the November 6 clash has suddenly become far more intriguing.
