13,000 Crore Box Office Record, Ugly Truth!

India’s box office created history in 2025 by collecting Rs 13,395 crore. The industry crossed the Rs 13,000 crore mark for the first time, beating the 2023 record of Rs 12,226 crore. On the surface, the numbers look celebratory, but the reality tells a different story.

Despite higher collections, reports point to a 6 percent drop in domestic theatrical footfalls. Only around 83.2 crore admissions were recorded across cinemas. This indicates fewer people are actually stepping into theatres compared to previous years.

Ideally, rising box office numbers should reflect growing audience interest. Instead, the industry is witnessing a cinematic scissor effect. Revenue growth is largely driven by increased ticket prices rather than higher attendance.

Average ticket prices have gone up by nearly 20 percent. In 2024, the average price was Rs 134, which has now climbed to Rs 161. This is the steepest year on year rise seen in the last three years.

These figures make it clear that collections are rising because fewer viewers are paying more. The overall audience base is shrinking, even as revenue headlines grow bigger.

Back in 2019, theatrical footfalls touched a peak of 109 crore admissions. That number has not been matched or surpassed in the last six years.

This trend suggests that cinema going is no longer a regular habit for many Indians. It has turned into an occasional activity driven by selective choices.

High ticket prices remain one of the biggest reasons behind this decline. Audiences now wait for specific films and are willing to spend only when the experience feels justified.

While the industry celebrates the Rs 13,000 crore milestone, it raises questions about long term sustainability. Ultimately, films exist for audiences, and without them, record numbers lose their true meaning.
