Jailer 2 faces expectations after Sardar 2 setback

Karthi’s highly anticipated sequel Sardar 2, directed by PS Mithran, was released in theatres on September 10 and has received disastrous responses from audiences and critics.

Due to the poor word of mouth, Sardar 2 is now heading towards a washout. According to reports, the film has collected only around Rs. 19 crore gross worldwide in five days.

The disastrous performance has triggered a big question: whether Kollywood really has a curse when it comes to sequels.

Apart from Suriya’s Singam 2, very few pure sequels from the Tamil industry have emerged as successful ventures. Although 2.0 performed well commercially, it reportedly failed to reach the breakeven mark and ended up as a loss-making venture for the makers.

Now, this trend has raised concerns over Rajinikanth‘s highly anticipated Jailer 2. Some social media users fear that the sequel could also face a similar fate and shock the trade.

However, some critics argue that after a blockbuster success, makers often rush to make sequels without having a strong enough story. Instead of building a proper continuation, they try to milk the hype around the original film. This is where many sequels fail to match audience expectations and eventually collapse at the box office.

A sequel should not be made just because the first part was a blockbuster. If there is no strong story or a genuine reason to continue the world, makers are better off avoiding the sequel rather than wasting huge amounts of money.

Jailer 2 now carries the pressure of breaking this trend. The original Jailer was a massive success with around Rs. 600 crore worldwide gross, and expectations for the sequel are extremely high, with the film expected to reach Rs. 1,000 crore.

Will Jailer 2 break Kollywood’s so-called sequel curse and become another blockbuster for Rajinikanth? Or will it become another major disappointment? The answer will decide whether this sequel trend is really a curse or simply a result of poor storytelling.
