Is It Time Mahesh Babu Killed the “Milk Boy” Image Forever?

Mahesh Babu has perfected the charming, clean-shaven, “he’s so cute, he’s so sweet” persona for years. The soft-spoken babu who either chases the heroine or gets chased by her has worked wonders at the box office.

But after a point, even the most successful formula starts feeling repetitive. With Varanasi under SS Rajamouli already positioning him in a much larger, mythic space, this is the perfect moment for a deliberate image shift.

Starting a story directly as a family man with two kids, the way Vijay did in Leo, would instantly give him a fresher, more grounded screen presence. No more prolonged “will they, won’t they” romantic tracks. Just a mature man with responsibilities, edges, and emotional weight.

The salt-and-pepper beard and long hair should stay. That look already adds quiet intensity and age-appropriate gravitas. It suits a 40+ superstar far better than the perpetual youthful “babu” tag.

Audiences have evolved. They are ready to see Mahesh as a man who has lived, not just a forever-charming romantic lead. This doesn’t mean abandoning mass appeal or charm completely.

It means expanding the range. A mature, bearded Mahesh playing a protective father or a complex family man can still deliver style, action, and emotion, only with more depth.

The “milk boy” phase was successful and memorable. But every superstar eventually needs to grow up on screen. For Mahesh Babu, that time feels right now.
