Mrunal’s Film Controversy: SC’s Shocking Judgment

Indian Movies often show people with disabilities in a disrespectful and demeaning way to make people laugh and generate some cheap comedy. This happens in both Bollywood and South Indian films.

On July 8, 2024, the Supreme Court of India made an important decision, creating rules for how movies should show people with disabilities.

This decision came after a complaint about the movie Aankh Micholi, starring Mrunal Thakur and Paresh Rawal, which showed disabled characters insensitively.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and other judges said that movies should show people with disabilities respectfully and accurately.

Movies have a big influence on how people think, and showing disabled people wrongly can cause harmful stereotypes.

The court said movies should show the real lives of disabled people, not just stereotypes, as this respects their dignity and the anti-discrimination law.

The court also pointed out that humor about disabilities should help people understand disabled individuals, not make fun of them.

Disability rights activists and people in the film industry support the Supreme Court’s decision. They believe it will lead to more sensitive and responsible storytelling about disabled individuals.

This decision also supports the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which aims to protect the rights and dignity of disabled people in all areas of life.
