Is Nani Returning to His Familiar Zone?
Nani has spent years building his image as the relatable guy next door. His natural performances, humour and family-friendly entertainers helped him establish a strong place in Telugu cinema. But over the last few years, he has steadily moved away from that comfort zone and explored more intense roles.
Dasara marked a major turning point in this transformation. Saripodhaa Sanivaaram and HIT 3 offered different shades of action, while The Paradise took Nani into a much more aggressive space. Despite the film’s extremely negative response, its massive opening proved that he has built an audience willing to watch him in different roles.
However, many still believe his biggest strength lies in relatable characters, emotional stories and entertaining family dramas. Now, Nani appears to be moving back towards that space with his upcoming projects.
Nani is currently working with Sujeeth on Bloody Romeo. The film is expected to have action, but reportedly not on the extreme scale seen in The Paradise. It is said to have a more stylish approach with a relatively classy touch.
Nani is also reportedly in discussions with Shiva Nirvana for a new project. The director is known for emotional dramas and relationship-based stories, making him a natural fit for Nani’s softer side. Following the success of Irumudi, their potential collaboration has generated interest, although the project is yet to be officially confirmed.
There is also talk of Nani working with Venky Atluri under Sithara Entertainments. Venky has largely built his reputation on class-oriented stories, emotional conflicts and relatable characters. If this project materialises, it could take Nani back towards the territory that originally made him popular.
Action has helped Nani expand his market and enter a bigger commercial space. But repeatedly doing high-intensity action films could limit the variety audiences expect from him. The response to his action avatar has also not been as positive as the appreciation he receives for emotionally driven, relatable roles. Many feel his personality suits grounded, entertaining stories better than over-the-top mass action.
Nani does not need to abandon action altogether. He simply needs to choose roles that suit his style and personality. A break from intense action could help him return to the genre with something fresh later.
The action hero has expanded Nani’s market, but the middle-class next-door Nani could still be his biggest strength.
