Lokesh: Victim of Hype or Audience Already Bored?

Following Vijay’s Leo, Lokesh Kanagaraj returned with Rajinikanth’s Coolie, which released in theaters yesterday. The movie has received mixed reactions from both audiences and critics across India.

After the industry hit Vikram, Lokesh Kanagaraj became one of the most sought-after directors in Indian cinema. His films have earned a strong fan following, establishing him as a key filmmaker in Kollywood.

However, Leo, his collaboration with Vijay, came with high expectations. Despite good box office collections, it fell short of audience expectations and was considered below average by some viewers.

After Leo, Lokesh announced his next project with Rajinikanth, titled Coolie. Pre-bookings were massive, and the film opened worldwide with solid numbers, generating excitement among fans.

Coolie, however, also did not fully meet audience expectations. The reviews have been mixed, though both Leo and Coolie are not considered failures or disasters. Some social media users have begun labeling Lokesh Kanagaraj as overrated.

Kollywood trackers responded that high audience expectations are the main reason for the mixed reactions. Following Vikram, his films draw comparisons to directors S.S. Rajamouli and Prashanth Neel in terms of anticipation.

They feel that over-expectations have influenced perceptions of his movies. Critics argue that Lokesh Kanagaraj remains one of the best directors in the industry, and the reception of Leo and Coolie is not a reflection of his talent.

Many believe that audiences should focus on constructive criticism rather than calling him overrated based on two films. Despite setbacks, fans are confident he will make a strong comeback with Kaithi 2, starring Karthi.
