Paid OTT Reviews and Web Series Social Media Hype
A film can have a weak trailer, little audience interest and still look like a sensation on social media, thanks to a flood of positive tweets and glowing reviews. Concerns over paid praise and manufactured hype have been around the film industry for years. Now, there is growing concern that the same culture is finding its way into the web series space.
The number of web series releasing on OTT platforms has grown, and every show wants people talking about it. Positive tweets can get viewers curious, while a string of good reviews can make a series look worth their time. But if those reactions are paid for, how are viewers supposed to know whether a show is genuinely good or simply being pushed hard online?
There is a difference between promoting a series and paying people to make it look like a hit. Audiences know that makers will advertise their content, but reviews are supposed to offer an honest opinion. When the two get mixed up, viewers are left guessing which reactions to believe.
This has been a long-running complaint in the film business. If the same thing is now happening with web series, it is another reason to question the hype surrounding new releases. After all, a series may be all over social media, but that does not mean audiences are actually loving it.
