The first weekend has always been crucial for a film. But it wasn’t supposed to be the entire theatrical game. Some movies could open slowly, benefit from positive word of mouth and find a bigger audience in the second or third weekend. That breathing space is now shrinking.
The growing preference for short theatrical-to-OTT windows is one reason. Four-week digital windows have become a regular point of discussion in the Telugu industry, with exhibitors and other stakeholders pushing for more breathing room before films move online.
The bigger impact is on films that need time. Not every movie is built for a massive Day 1. Some depend on reviews, audience recommendations and repeat viewings to pick up gradually. When viewers already know that the same film will reach OTT within a few weeks, waiting becomes easier, while the second weekend loses some of its importance.
There is another side to it, as producers also depend on digital deals for financial recovery. But the theatrical business could become increasingly front-loaded if this trend continues.
The concern isn’t simply that audiences may wait for OTT. It is that films may get fewer chances to recover after a slow opening.
