Pongal BO Nightmare: 2 Huge Disasters, 1 Surprise Winner

This Pongal seems to be a disaster for the Kollywood industry in terms of business because Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, which was supposed to be released this Pongal was postponed due to censorship certificate issues, while Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi is also struggling at the box office due to mixed reviews.

Initially, only Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi were the two expected releases for Pongal in Kollywood. However, due to Jana Nayagan’s postponement, Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar and Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil got an opportunity to enter the Pongal race.

Since Vaa Vaathiyaar and Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil were medium-budget movies, no one had high hopes for them and many trade experts predicted that Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi was going to have a solid theatrical run, as there weren’t any strong contenders and it was expected to do wonders at the box office this Pongal.

But everything turned upside down for Parasakthi from Day 2. Despite a solid opening and 27 crores worldwide collections on Day 1, Parasakthi is struggling to sustain itself in theaters due to disastrous word of mouth from the audience and the film is heading towards a washout status in many B and C centers.

At the same time, since Parasakthi failed to create an impact, many Kollywood trackers believed that Vaa Vaathiyaar would use this golden opportunity to dominate the Pongal weekend. However, it also ended up as a disappointment, failing to satisfy expectations and currently performing very averagely at the box office.

While the two expected movies ended up as disappointments, in a shocking surprise, Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is performing well at the box office with solid positive word of mouth.

According to reports, despite having a very low screen count in Tamil Nadu, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is dominating Parasakthi in ticket bookings and the advance bookings for this weekend are also rock solid for the film in the state.

However, trade experts are now suggesting that even though Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is performing well, the total business from Kollywood for this Pongal is not up to expectations. Taking into account the performance of Parasakthi, Vaa Vaathiyaar, and Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, they are terming this Pongal a disaster for Kollywood.
