Rahul Dev has unexpectedly triggered controversy with his recent comments about Mahesh Babu during a YouTube podcast interview. The clip quickly went viral because it referenced Mahesh Babu’s old statement that “Bollywood can’t afford me.”
During the conversation, the interviewer brought up Mahesh’s much-discussed remark about why he was not interested in doing direct Hindi films. Responding to it, Rahul Dev jokingly said in Hindi that the real issue was that Mahesh “doesn’t even know the language.” He then added that Mahesh mostly works in sensible Telugu films with directors like Trivikram Srinivas while occasionally balancing them with commercial entertainers.
Although the comment appeared casual, many fans interpreted it as a dig at Mahesh Babu’s Hindi-speaking ability and his absence from Bollywood. The clip quickly spread across social media and reopened the larger North vs South cinema debate that has become common in the pan-India era.
Mahesh Babu already enjoys strong recognition across India despite not actively working in Bollywood. His earlier “Bollywood can’t afford me” comment was also interpreted differently by audiences.
