Ramayana Faces Tough Diwali Competition
Ramayana is heading towards a crowded festive season, with several South Indian films competing for screens and audience attention. With its massive budget and huge expectations, the film will need a strong theatrical run to stand out during Diwali.
The film is scheduled to release on November 5, but the Tamil market will see fresh competition the very next day. Suriya’s Scene and Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2 are reportedly arriving on November 6. Scene, in particular, could take up a significant number of screens across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, making the opening weekend more challenging for Ramayana. Also, the craze for Lord Rama is a bit less in Tamil Nadu, as the state is believed to have a tradition of Ravana worship, so audiences there might show little interest in Ramayana.
Telugu cinema will also add to the competition. Venkatesh and Trivikram’s Adarsha Kutumbam is scheduled to arrive on October 30. If the film receives positive word of mouth, it could retain a strong screen count during its second weekend, leaving fewer screens for Ramayana.
Smaller Telugu films, including Summer Holidays, Itlu Arjuna, and Hatah, will also compete for screens and audience attention. Meanwhile, Jailer 2 could remain a strong contender if it continues its box-office run.
The biggest challenge for Ramayana will be securing enough screens across different markets. Star power and a massive budget may help it get a strong opening, but audience response will determine how long it can hold its ground.
The release strategy is a massive risk. Ramayana cannot depend on the North Indian market alone to recover its huge investment. It needs strong business across India and overseas. Godzilla could also compete for screens and audience attention, not just in international markets but also in India, adding another challenge.
With several major films arriving within days of each other, Diwali 2026 could become a crucial box-office battle. Ramayana has enormous expectations to live up to, but the competition could make its path to breakeven much harder.
