Ramayana's Pay Per View Digital Gamble!!
Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana is trying a different approach for its digital release. Instead of a regular OTT release, the film is set to arrive on JioHotstar through a pay-per-view model after its theatrical run. But considering piracy is still a big problem, can this model really bring in the kind of money the makers are reportedly looking at?
Earlier reports suggested that producer Namit Malhotra rejected a Rs 700 crore OTT offer for both parts of Ramayana. Buzz is that he was looking at a massive Rs 1,000 crore deal for two parts. If divided equally, that comes to around Rs 500 crore per part. However, these figures have not been officially confirmed by the makers.
With the JioHotstar partnership, the digital release plans have taken an interesting turn. Under the pay-per-view model, viewers will have to pay separately to watch the film. The pricing and digital release date are yet to be announced.
The big question is how many people will actually pay to watch it. At Rs 500 per purchase, the film needs around 10 crore paid transactions to generate Rs 500 crore in gross revenue. That is a huge number, even for a film as ambitious as Ramayana.
Piracy could make things difficult. While many fans may want to experience the film in the best possible quality, some viewers might look for unauthorised copies instead of paying to watch it.
With Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, expectations are already high. But will that interest be enough to convince crores of people to pay separately to watch the film at home?
A Rs 500 crore digital business for one part is no small target. Ramayana could show whether pay-per-view has the potential to work on this scale in India, but a lot will depend on the pricing, audience response and how well the makers tackle piracy.
