Ramayana Faces a Major IMAX Battle
Bollywood’s biggest film Ramayana could face a massive setback in the US market, with its access to IMAX and other premium large-format screens expected to become limited after its premiere shows.
According to the latest reports, Ramayana Part 1 is scheduled to release in the USA on Thursday, November 5, with premiere shows planned for Wednesday, November 4, at 3 PM EST, which is 1:30 AM IST on November 5.
Ramayana is planning a wide IMAX and premium large-format rollout for its premiere shows. However, its access to these screens could shrink significantly afterwards, with Godzilla Minus Zero emerging as the biggest obstacle.
Losing premium screens would be a serious blow for a film of Ramayana’s scale. Made on a reported budget of Rs. 4,000 crores, the mythological epic promises grand visuals and elaborate action sequences. IMAX screens could help showcase these elements in their full glory and attract audiences looking for a premium theatrical experience.
Ramayana is also expected to introduce India’s glorious mythology to Western audiences on a massive scale. In this context, IMAX screens are not just an added advantage but an important part of its overseas strategy.
Producer Namit Malhotra has consistently stressed the importance of the US and overseas markets to the film. A strong performance abroad will be crucial for a project targeting a global audience, not just Indian viewers.
A wide IMAX release could help Ramayana not only create a strong opening but also generate social media buzz and attract audiences during its crucial first few days. Losing access to these screens after the premieres could affect that momentum big time.
