At a recent Behindwoods event in Chennai, actor Rishab Shetty shared his views on imitating onscreen moments linked to sacred traditions. Though he did not name anyone, his remarks came amid the controversy around a Daiva scene from Kantara allegedly imitated by Ranveer Singh.
Rishab Shetty said such acts make him uncomfortable, especially when sacred elements are involved. He explained that while Kantara is cinema, the Daiva tradition shown in the film carries deep spiritual and emotional meaning.
He stated that wherever he goes, he requests people not to perform or mock the Daiva element on stage. Rishab stressed that it is closely connected to the emotions and beliefs of many people, making respect essential.
The actor also spoke about the efforts taken by the team of Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 to present local traditions authentically. He said the makers ensured rituals and cultural practices were portrayed with sincerity and responsibility.
Rishab reiterated that the intention was to help audiences understand the importance of these traditions. He said they were never meant to be reduced to moments of entertainment or mockery.
Earlier, at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the imitation of a Kantara scene had drawn criticism from sections of the Kannada audience. Responding to this, Rishab maintained that divine and sacred scenes should always be treated with respect.
He added that if any comment or portrayal had unintentionally hurt sentiments, he sincerely regrets it. His response reflected a balanced and respectful approach to the issue.
