SRK in Mahesh Babu’s Footsteps: Power of South Cinema?

Shah Rukh Khan Mahesh Babu comparison

Bollywood’s biggest superstar Shah Rukh Khan continues to enjoy unmatched popularity as both a versatile actor and one of the richest stars in Asia. After decades of iconic roles, recent reports suggest he is slowly rethinking his career choices, especially the kind of characters and cinema he wants to explore next. Interestingly, there is growing buzz that he is looking closely at South Indian cinema and its strong, rooted characters.

Over the past week, social media has been filled with speculation that Shah Rukh Khan may act in a South Indian film. The buzz grew stronger after veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty made an unexpected comment in an interview while talking about Jailer 2. Mithun said the script impressed him deeply and casually mentioned that the film could feature a powerful ensemble including Rajinikanth, Mohanlal, Shah Rukh Khan, Ramya Krishnan, and Shiva Rajkumar. Though there is no official confirmation, this statement alone was enough to ignite fan excitement.

Fans believe that a Rajinikanth–Shah Rukh Khan combination would lead to historic celebrations in theatres.

At the same time, Shah Rukh Khan is busy with his upcoming Bollywood film King, which is special because it marks his daughter Suhana Khan’s theatrical debut. After the massive success of Pathaan and Jawan, expectations around King are extremely high. Many believe the success of Jawan reinforced Shah Rukh’s confidence in South-style storytelling and character-driven action.

What has especially caught the attention of South audiences is the talk that Shah Rukh’s role in King is similar in intensity to the character played by Mahesh Babu in Athadu, where Mahesh portrayed a professional assassin. While the story of King is said to be different, the character tone is expected to be similarly intense. Reports also suggest the film draws inspiration from Léon: The Professional, which was earlier remade in Hindi as Bichhoo.

Overall, it appears Shah Rukh Khan is consciously moving beyond traditional Bollywood formulas. By embracing South-influenced narratives and powerful character-driven roles, he seems keen on exploring new cinematic territory and reinventing himself once again.
