Two Star Kids, One Painful Reality Check

In the film industry, a famous surname can make the first step much easier. It can bring attention, create curiosity and even put a debut project under a much bigger spotlight. But the real test begins only when the film reaches theatres.

That reality has hit two star sons this Gandhi Jayanthi weekend. SS Karthikeya made his full-time production debut with Don’t Trouble The Trouble, while Jason Sanjay stepped into direction with Sigma. Both projects had plenty of industry attention behind them, but neither has managed to turn that advantage into the kind of theatrical momentum expected.

Sigma in particular struggled to show growth over its opening weekend, with its Sunday numbers remaining flat. Don’t Trouble The Trouble showed better movement on Sunday, but its overall theatrical run has still started softly.

And that makes their debuts interesting for a bigger reason. A star surname can get a film noticed. It can bring the right people together and create a strong launch platform. But once the audience enters the theatre, the film has to speak for itself.

For both Karthikeya and Jason Sanjay, that first independent test has turned out to be far tougher than the launch suggested.
