M9 News journalist Nishant spoke with Tharun Bhascker ahead of the release of Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi on January 30th. The conversation covered his personal journey, creative discipline, and views on the current film industry.
Tharun Bhascker recalled his Pellichoopulu phase and the emotional pressure of writing a romantic comedy when doctors said his father’s days were numbered. He shared how he would wake up at night to check if his father was still alive.
He stressed that writers should never talk about writer’s block. According to him, writing must continue in any condition and place. He also explained how aspiring writers should train themselves to stay consistent and adaptable.
Tharun spoke about how Reels and Shorts are challenging filmmakers today. He said shrinking attention spans are changing storytelling patterns and forcing creators to rethink pacing and engagement.
He also reflected on his father’s involvement in the Telangana movement and his own complex feelings about the state bifurcation. Budget constraints, he said, unintentionally led him to use Telangana slang more in his earlier films.
Tharun noted that speaking Andhra slang in Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi gave him a strong sense of belonging. He added that his father would have been happy seeing how his creative journey evolved.
He also revealed that he is reworking the horse riding script planned with Victory Venkatesh and believes it remains relevant. Tharun confirmed discussions on a separate script that was earlier planned with Vijay Deverakonda.
That script, he said, went back and forth and will now be developed with a different cast and setup. The interview also touched on the challenges surrounding Vijay Deverakonda’s career trajectory.
