The premiere shows of The Paradise are just hours away, and the film has already created a new record for Nani. Based on pre-sales, it is set to become the biggest opener of his career.
But behind this massive hype is a huge business target. The Paradise was made on a big budget of around Rs. 150 crores, according to trade reports, and the theatrical rights were sold at record prices for a Nani film. Trade reports suggest that the film needs a little over Rs. 100-crore share to be called a clean hit. That roughly translates to a worldwide gross of around Rs. 200-210 crores.
Ravi Teja’s Irumudi reportedly collected around Rs. 200 crores worldwide. That is almost the kind of business The Paradise needs to achieve just to reach the safety mark for its buyers. In other words, Ravi Teja’s blockbuster business is now the target Nani needs to achieve for a hit verdict.
The good news is that the producers have already recovered a sizeable portion of their investment through non-theatrical deals. Netflix reportedly paid around Rs. 50 crores for the OTT rights, while the audio rights brought in around Rs. 15 crores. So, the producers’ position appears relatively safe.
The real pressure is now on the buyers. They need The Paradise to deliver strong theatrical business to recover their investments and enter the profit zone.
The hype around The Paradise is extraordinary. If the film receives decent to good reports, the current audience frenzy could give it a strong chance to cross the hit mark. However, the scale of the pre-release business means that anything less than a strong theatrical run could put the buyers at serious risk.
Within a few hours, we will know whether The Paradise, directed by Srikanth Odela and produced by Sudhakar Cherukuri, turns into a jackpot for buyers or a nightmare.
